Galatians 5:16-23 teaches that at any moment we are either walking by the Holy Spirit or according to the sin nature. Walking by the Spirit, enjoying fellowship with God, walking in the light are virtually synonymous. During these times, the Holy Spirit is working in us to illuminate our minds to the truth of Scripture and to challenge us to apply what we learn. But when we sin, we begin to live based on the sin nature. Our works do not count for eternity. The only way to recover is to confess (admit, acknowledge) our sin to God the Father and we are instantly forgiven, cleansed, and recover our spiritual walk (1 John 1:9). Please make sure you are walking by the Spirit before you begin your Bible study, so it will be spiritually profitable.

Dr. Bryan J. Hult [Chaplain (Brigadier General ret.)] serves as pastor at Grace Evangelical Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. He retired on September 30, 2010 as the Army National Guard Assistant Chief of Chaplains responsible for assisting and advising the Army Chief of Chaplains on all programs, policies and plans affecting the Army National Guard Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants. He was responsible to oversee Army National Guard chaplains in the 50 United States and additional territories.

He enlisted as an infantry soldier on 5 May 1978 and completed Officer Candidate School on 27 July 1979. He then completed Airborne School, Infantry Officer Basic Course and Rotary Wing Officer Flight School in 1980. He served four years with the Second Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas as a command pilot in the OH-58 and UH-1H helicopters with over 700 hours.

His subsequent military education includes many schools culminating with the United States Army War College where he received his Masters of Strategic Studies in 2004.

He branch transferred to the Chaplaincy in 1988 and served as Hospital Chaplain at Tripler Army Hospital. In 1993, he transferred to the Indiana National Guard. His Indiana chaplain assignments include serving as Battalion and Brigade Chaplain; 76th Separate Infantry Brigade Chaplain; 38th Infantry Division Chaplain; and Joint Forces Headquarters Indiana Chaplain.

His awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; many other medals, including the Army Aviation Badge; Parachutist Badge; and the Expert Infantry Badge.

Chaplain Hult holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota; a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology Summa Cum Laude from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary; and a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. In 1988, he planted a church in Minneapolis and merged that church with another, serving in Minnesota for five years. For the last twenty years, he serves as senior pastor of Grace Evangelical Church in Indianapolis, Indiana (www.indygrace.org) and is ordained with the Evangelical Free Church of America. He is certified with NANC (National Association of Nouthetic Counselors).

Chaplain Hult is married to the former Barbara Hall from Edina, Minnesota and they have one married daughter, Katy (Matt) Hazard, and three granddaughters.

As pastor, he has a passion for clearly communicating God’s Word and discipling disciple-makers. He envisions continued life transformation in disciples by connecting, equipping and multiplying them for their unique spiritual journey.

1) What is a chaplain?

a) Definition of a Chaplain: A chaplain is a credentialed minister recognized by a faith-based organization to render spiritual care to assigned recipients in a non-religious institution, like the Army. Chaplains serve in hundreds of capacities from the military, to hospitals, prison, sports, businesses, educational institutions, police and fire departments. He/she can be Protestant, Catholic, or even Jewish, Buddhist or Imam. The chaplain is a non-combatant, i.e., he does not carry a weapon.
