Understanding Islam

Islam has spread throughout the Western world in ways unimagined 40 years ago. During this time, jihadism has made Islamic terrorism normative. Yet, there are vast numbers of business and political leaders as well as church leaders who continue to speak of Islam as only a religion of peace. Some churches even include interfaith forums between Christians and Moslem leaders creating much controversy. With the rise of Islam today, what must the Christian know about this religion? What is their view of sin, salvation, and Jesus? What is their view of the future? What mandates about the world and the future are found in the Koran and the Hadith? Can there be detente between Islam and Christianity? What are the political realities of Islamic law called Shariah, and how is that impacting European countries and the United States and Canada?

To address these vital questions Chafer Seminary invited Shahram Hadian, a former Muslim who converted to Christianity as a young adult to help us understand the truth about Islam and the direction of modern Islamic movements. It is vital for Bible-believing Christians to be informed for the dual purpose of evangelism, as well as the political and civil decisions that must be made in relation to Islamic immigration.

This was the major focus of the conference this year. Eight sessions were devoted to the study of Islam. The other sessions focused on some vital studies of God’s Word where we were refreshed by the eternal truths of the Scripture. The following topics were discussed:

Bruce Baker: The Knowledge of God: The Starting Point for Apologetics. Romans 1:18–21

Bob Bolender: 1,000 Generations of the Dispensation of “The Fullness of Times”

Charles Clough: Interactive Session on Chafer Theological Seminary and You

Craig Northcott: The Local Church’s Role in Government

Andy Woods: 2 Thessalonians 2:3a: Spiritual Apostasy? Or Rapture?

The Present Battle for the Bible: Inerrancy and Interpretation

Recent analysis has shown that the vast majority of “conservative” evangelical scholars claim to hold to inerrancy, but in the opinion of one of them, if they were held to the standard of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, perhaps 95% of them would fall short.

Understanding these issues and the facts that support the inerrancy of the Scripture are crucial for any Christian. How one understands the extent of the authority and veracity of the text impacts everything from interpretation to application.

At the 2017 Chafer Theological Seminary Pastors’ Conference (March 13–15, 2017) our two keynote speakers each had four-part series that addressed these issues.

Hear the discussions on these issues from our keynote speakers Dr. F. David Farnell, who addressed “Critical Issues in Inerrancy,” and Dr. H. Wayne House who enlightened us on “Problems and Challenges on Interpretation”.

Other speakers and topics included:

Bennett Greenspan: “Are Modern Jews Descended from the Biblical Israelites?”

Mark Musser: “Theological Romanticism, Higher Criticism & Post-Modern Fascism: A German Odyssey”

David Roseland: “Scottish Common Sense Philosophy and Inerrancy”

Andy Woods: “Apocalyptic Genre and Inerrancy”.

One session featured a report and update on Chafer Seminary.

November 2016

Are we in the end times? So many today are asking this question along with many other similar questions: What does the Bible teach about the Rapture of the Church; Daniel’s 70th week; the Tribulation; the Great Tribulation; the Millennium, and more? These topics, along with others, were the subject matter of the Eschatology / End Times Seminar sponsored by Chafer Theological Seminary at Hoffmantown Church in Albuquerque, NM.

Israel Today: Understanding Critical Issues Conference (2016)
September 2016

Jewish and Christian Allies for Israel

The news from around the world is disturbing. Incidents of anti-Semitism are on the rise. Opposition to the historic teaching of Christianity also increases. Islamism targets both. Progressive organizations have been reported by different media outlets to be in support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement designed to delegitimize Israel. As such some of these groups have suggested that Zionism, Jewish or Christian is incompatible with their beliefs. What is going on in the world?

In May, 2016 my wife and I (Dr. Dean) were privileged to be part of a 10-day seminar for Christian leaders at Yad Vashem, in Jerusalem. Some of the lectures focused on the rise of the new anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. A recent symposium I was involved with at a synagogue in Dallas, Texas, also had speakers raising the alarm on the increasing hostility to Jews, and also Christians. For the last few years a repetitive theme has been that the evangelical Christian community and the Jewish community need to build bridges of understanding and support on common issues to face increasing opposition. Together we are stronger than separate.

West Houston Bible Church is committed to being a part of this bridge-building endeavor. As such we continue to host educational events for both communities. Our desire is to provide a venue where Christians and Jews can come together based on our common support of the state of Israel. The topics in this symposium are chosen because they are the critical issues which need to be understood by everyone in our separate communities.

Video DVDs of these presentations can be ordered here and here.

2016 DM2 Romans
January 2016 - May 2016

West Houston Bible Church in conjunction with Disciple Makers Multiplied (DM2) is hosting Bible classes to train men and women in the DM2 Romans 1-8 curriculum. The purpose is to prepare men and women to be disciple makers in the spirit of 2 Timothy 2:2.

The goal of these Bible studies is to equip the saints for effective service whether it be at home or within your family, in a Bible study or Sunday school, or even on the mission field. This workshop is for everyone! Whenever our Lord calls for your service, will you be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you? 1 Peter 3:15

DM2 was originally designed to give sound Bible teaching to pastors and leaders in the developing world and facilitate these leaders to pass on this teaching. Due to the tremendous effectiveness of DM2’s strategy overseas, these workshops have been introduced here in the USA where they’ve been met with great enthusiasm.

The Student Manual for the series is available here. The Teacher Manual (with all of the answers) is available here. The Romans overview chart is available here.

You can order a free multi-class all-in-one disc of Part 1 of this seminar here.

Insights Into Biblical Creation and Other Critical Biblical Studies

Chafer Theological Seminary (CTS) continues to stand for an inerrant Bible and a literal interpretation. One of the foundational doctrines derived from this is a young earth creation (with or without a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2). Young Earth creation was a standard view of literal inerrantists in the 60s and 70s, but is poorly represented among contemporary evangelical elites.

Many Christians have not yet truly come to grips with the evidence of a young Earth vs. an old Earth compromise with the presuppositions of evolution’s time tables.

The 2016 Chafer Conference's keynote speaker Dr. Steve Austin is one of the most profound scientific voices for biblical creationism today and he addressed some of these issues.

Tommy Ice's observations from his recent trip to the "Christ at the Checkpoint Conference" in Bethlehem kicked off the conference.

Bruce Baker's paper, "What on Earth is God Doing?" presented a comprehensive overview of God's plan for the ages, from Genesis to Revelation.

Ray Mondragon enlightened us with his paper on "Babel – Implications and Evidence of Early Advanced Culture" – discussing significant implications of the historical event, and actual evidence that early civilizations were very advanced, not primitive as current evolutionary thinking dictates.

Charlie Clough discussed "Sin, Deception, and the Corruption of Science: A Look at the So-Called Climate Crisis".

Dan Hill's presentation on "African Tribal Religion and its Influence on American Culture and the American Church" was a real eye-opener..

David Roseland discussed "Theological Method and John Nelson Darby" during his presentation.

Andy Woods spoke on "The Kadesh Barnea Paradigm as a Solution to the Problem of Hebrews 6:4–6".

We also had a special Seder meal presentation by Guillermo (Bill) Katz of Chosen People Ministries.

2014 Disciple Makers Multiplied (DM2)
September 2014 - August 2015

West Houston Bible Church in conjunction with Disciple Makers Multiplied (DM2) hosted a workshop to train men and women in the DM2 Panorama of the Life of Christ - Part 1 curriculum. The purpose is to prepare men and women to be disciple makers in the spirit of 2 Timothy 2:2.

The goal of this workshop is to equip the saints for effective service whether it be at home or within your family, in a Bible study or Sunday school, or even on the mission field.

On the surface, a DM2 workshop might seem like just another Bible conference, but it's much more than that. In a very short period of time, DM2’s teaching methodology takes people from one level of Biblical understanding to the next, while at the same time equipping and encouraging them to teach others in the spirit of 2 Timothy 2:2.

The workshops are intensive with multiple hours of teaching each day, but because teachers are rotated and because of the format of the workbooks, and the intense fellowship in the Word, time flies! The result is a group of enthusiastic, prepared disciple-makers who can easily go on to teach others what they’ve learned.

The Student Manual for the seminar is available here. The Teacher Manual (with all of the answers) is available here.

You can order a free multi-class all-in-one disc of Part 1 of this seminar here.

2015 Coast Bible Conference
July 2015

Dr. Dean was one of the featured speakers at the 2015 Coast Bible Conference in Gulfport, MS in July 2015. His topic was How to Grow Spiritually.

2015 Chafer Theological Seminary Bible Conference
June 2015

This year’s Chafer Conference was a potpourri of stimulating topics. Several speakers had multiple sessions including Dr. Andy Woods and Dr. Bruce Baker. Since the Lord surprised us by taking our previous Keynote speaker, Dr. Glen Riddle, home in early March, we decided to continue with the main line of his topic which was to better understand the true grace of the gospel. Four of us are contributors to a recently published book, 21 Tough Questions about Grace. Jim Myers, Dr. Andy Woods, Mark Musser, and Dr. Robert Dean focused on these sometime challenging passages for understanding the grace of God.

Dr. Bruce Baker took three sessions to address critical issues and trends in the Spiritual Life, including a critique of the Spiritual Formation Movement.

Two of the most popular questions related to end times events were addressed. Both of these questions have gone to center stage due to the potential threat of a nuclear Iran and the rise of ISIS. Dr. Andy Woods will give a two-session presentation on Ezekiel 38–39 and the timing of those events. And Dr. Tommy Ice addressed a frequently asked question, "Does Biblical Prophecy Suggest a Future Moslem AntiChrist?"

Additionally, we had a presentation by Chafer graduate, Nate Purtzer, on the "Value of Learning Biblical Greek".

The conference DVDs are available here or here.

2014 Chafer Theological Seminary Bible Conference
March 2014

Dispensationalism

You can find the conference materials for the 2014 Chafer Theological Seminary annual Pastor's conference here. The theme for the 2014 conference was Dispensationalism.

Much controversy has been stirred up regarding dispensationalism since John Nelson Darby first systematized this theology. Since the early 19th century, though, millions of faithful believers have learned to “rightly divide” the Word of Truth by learning to consistently apply principles of literal interpretation to the Scripture. The result has made it clear that God has a distinct plan for Israel and a distinct plan for the Church. At this conference we learned about the history of dispensationalism, theological distinctives of dispensationalism, and implications of dispensationalism for our understanding of God’s Word.

The speakers at this year’s conference spent decades of study researching critical issues related to dispensational theology. We hope that God will give you fresh insight into the understanding and application of His Word in your life through the study of these topics.

The conference was hosted by West Houston Bible Church March 10-12, 2014. The speakers at the conference included Keynote Speaker Elliott Johnson, as well as daytime speakers Bruce Baker, Charles Clough, Christopher Cone, Tommy Ice, Ray Mondragon, Mike Stallard, and Andy Woods. The conference kick-off speaker was Robert Dean.

The conference DVDs are available here or here.

Dr, Dean has put together a suggested reading list on Dispensationalism. Click here to download the document.
