"It may be a reflection on human nature that such devices [separation of powers proposed in the Constitution] should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself."

Thus wrote James Madison in 1788 as he advocated ratification of the U. S. Constitution and who would later sponsor the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. Along with that generation of the US founding fathers, Madison was well aware of the dangers of civil power given the condition of human nature. While we can quibble with him over his generic and benign evaluation of angels, we certainly can admire his concise statement of the "great difficulty" in framing a government. ...

The idea of treason appears several times in the Bible, denoting an attempt to overthrow the ruling authority to whom one owes allegiance.

1. In 1 Samuel 24:11, David assures King Saul that he has not plotted “treason” against the king.

2. In 2 Kings 11:14 (|| 2 Ch. 23:13) Queen Athaliah cries out “Treason! Treason!” when she discovers that the priests had crowned a new king, her grandson, Joash.

3. In Ezekiel 17:20, God warns the Israelites that He will severely punish them for “treason … committed against [Him].” ...

During this present time of cultural and political division, many, including Christians, wonder if this once great nation can survive. Because most are willfully ignorant of this nation’s historical roots, the bulk of such discussions lack the historical perspective necessary for cogent debate. Regrettably, the greatest knowledge deficit relates to God’s Word, the very area of expertise of our Founding Fathers, who grounded this Republic in the teaching of God’s Word as accurately expounded from many Colonial pulpits. We owe our nation’s very existence to these pastors of different denominational affiliations along the Atlantic coast and the frontier wilderness of the Colonies, men who understood their role in human government and were unafraid to serve publicly as God’s servants and bold communicators of His Truth. Why did these men, in face of great personal danger, choose to teach the biblical principles of governance and civil disobedience and stand firm in those Truths? An understanding of history, human government, and the purpose of God’s gifting to pastors is key to understanding the cause of the original greatness of our country and to regaining the spiritual stability and confidence that sustained our courageous forefathers in their battle for liberty and justice for all. ...

At the time of this writing, a high school principal and athletic director have been exonerated from criminal contempt charges for offering a public prayer over a meal at an athletic banquet. Yet, how could such a seemingly harmless activity ever rise to the level of a potential crime in the United States of America? The answer: a distorted reading of the Constitution that supposedly erects a high and impregnable wall between church and state. It is because of this lie, which was first introduced into the fabric of our culture through errant Supreme Court decisions of the early 1960s, that city councils are sued for placing manger scenes on the steps of city hall, public schools are prohibited from teaching scientific creationism alongside evolution, copies of the Ten Commandments are stricken from government walls, teacher-led prayer and Bible reading is prohibited in public schools, and Christianity has generally been purged from public life.
